It has been shown to be toxic to mammalian cells, with an LD50 of 1.1 mM/mL for K562 cells and 5.5 mM/mL for fetal bovine cells. Methylenebis(phosphonic dichloride) has also been shown to have efficient cytotoxic activity against covid-19 pandemic virus (HIV). This compound has not been found to be mutagenic or carcinogenic in studies on mice, rats, or rabbits.
