N-Methylnicotinamide is an experimental drug that is being studied for its ability to treat metabolic disorders, such as fatty-acid oxidation defects. N-Methylnicotinamide is a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme creatine kinase, which is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It has been shown to be effective in vivo in animals as well as in vitro in cell cultures. The compound binds to the active site of creatine kinase, preventing ATP from binding and inhibiting the phosphorylation of ADP. N-Methylnicotinamide has been shown to be effective against animal models of metabolic disorders, including urea cycle disorders and fatty acid oxidation defects. This agent also shows promise for treating human diseases caused by disturbances in mitochondrial function.
