• Descrizione: Carbamazepine is a drug that is used in the treatment of epilepsy and neuropathic pain. Carbamazepine is a prodrug that is metabolized to its active form, 10-carbamoyl-10H-phenothiazine (10-CBP). The major metabolites of carbamazepine are sulfoxides that result from oxidative deamination of the side chain by cytochrome P450 enzymes. 10-CBP binds to DNA and RNA and inhibits the synthesis of proteins. Carbamazepine has been shown to be effective for psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, but does not affect the central nervous system or alter mood. It also has an activation energy, which determines how quickly it acts on cells. The higher the activation energy, the more difficult it will be for cells to break down carbamazepine, resulting in a longer duration of action.
