The bioassay was activated by the addition of nicotinic acetylcholine. The reaction products were analyzed by sequencing and primer extension reactions, which confirmed methyl indole-6-carboxylate as an inhibitor of bacterial protein synthesis. This molecule interacts with the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the bacteria, causing it to release acetylcholine. Methyl indole-6-carboxylate also inhibits the enzyme DNA primase, which is required for DNA replication.
