2-Methylthiophenothiazine is a phenothiazine that is used as an antibiotic. It has been shown to be effective against drug-resistant tuberculosis and other bacteria. 2-Methylthiophenothiazine inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to DNA and RNA, which prevents protein synthesis and replication. The operational mechanism of this drug is not well understood, but it has been shown to be an effective treatment for tuberculosis. This drug also acts as an efflux pump inhibitor, which may contribute to its effectiveness. 2-Methylthiophenothiazine has also been shown to have efficiencies in acceptor cells such as Mycobacterium smegmatis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
