Monocrotophos is a chemical pesticide that is used in wastewater treatment. It is a neurotoxic organophosphate insecticide with high resistance to degradation. Monocrotophos has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase, which are important for nervous system function, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) DNA synthesis. Monocrotophos has also been shown to cause genotoxic effects in organisms such as humans, rats, and earthworms. The genotoxic effects may be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and protein synthesis at high doses or its ability to bind to DNA bases or affect the structure of DNA during replication.
