The release of formaldehyde can be inhibited by adding an acid to the urine sample or by adding hippurate to methenamine hippurate. Methenamine hippurate may cause drug interactions with other drugs that are eliminated through the kidneys, such as acetaminophen, sulfonamides, and indomethacin.
