Methyl 4-(chlorocarbonyl)benzoate is a synthetic retinoid that has potent inhibitory activity against the growth factor-stimulated proliferation of human HL-60 cells. It interacts with the cholesterol ester transfer protein, which inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, resulting in an anti-inflammatory effect. Methyl 4-(chlorocarbonyl)benzoate has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells by light emission. This compound also exhibits high hydrogen bonding interactions with pyridinium ions and quinolinium ions.
