Methyl 2-methoxy-4-methylbenzoate has been postulated to react with the anion of octaketide in order to yield a benzoate product via an ionic mechanism. The protonated intermediate is then deprotonated and the resulting resonance stabilized cation reacts with the anion of octaketide to produce methyl 2-methoxy-4-methylbenzoate.
