Malonaldehyde bis(phenylimine) monohydrochloride is a synthetic molecule that is used as a ligand and model compound. It has been shown to have dissociative properties, which allow it to bind to metal ions by removing two of its three electrons. This property makes malonaldehyde bis(phenylimine) monohydrochloride a useful chemical for the synthesis of metal-containing compounds. Malonaldehyde bis(phenylimine) monohydrochloride is an anion with six oxygen atoms, which form a resonance structure when in solution due to the symmetry of the molecule. This resonance structure can be disrupted by adding an electron-withdrawing group, such as HCl, giving rise to an ionic species (malonaldehyde bis(phenylimine) hydrochloride).
