Descrizione:Methyl thioglycolate is a chemical compound that is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an intermediate. It has been used to synthesize anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, and also for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Methyl thioglycolate binds to amino acids on the surface of bacteria, which prevents them from functioning properly. This binding causes the cells to stop growing and die. Methyl thioglycolate also inhibits protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomes from attaching to messenger RNA (mRNA). Methyl thioglycolate has been shown to be a model system for studying oxidative DNA damage because it reacts with divalent metals such as copper or iron to form stable covalent bonds. These reactions lead to the formation of reactive oxygen species that can cause DNA strand breaks.
