7-Methyl-1-tetralone (7MT) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that has been optimised to produce a more efficient and selective reaction. The isomers of 7MT are disulfides, which are reduced catalytically in the presence of hydrogen gas to form the desired product, 2,5-dimethyl-2,4-hexadiene-1,6-diol. This process is highly efficient and produces the desired product in high yield. This product is then purified using liquid chromatography before being acylated with hexanoic anhydride to make it soluble in water. 7MT has carcinogenic properties and can cause cancer in rats when injected directly into their stomachs. It also contains polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are carcinogenic and may cause cancer.
