2-Methyl-1-benzothiophene is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor that has been shown to be an antidiabetic agent with potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. It also has been used as a fluorescent probe for sulfoxides and as a fluorescence probe for phosphorus pentachloride. 2-Methyl-1-benzothiophene is structurally related to benzimidazole, which is used in the synthesis of fungicides and herbicides. This chemical compound has been studied extensively for its reaction with carbonyl groups, hydrogen bonds, and steric interactions.
