Maoecrystal A is a primary metabolite that belongs to the group of phytochemicals. It is isolated from Maoecystis sp., which is a plant in the brown algae family. The chemical structure of maoecrystal A includes a tetrahydropyran ring, a five-membered pyrrole ring and an ester group. It has been used as reference material for HPLC standards and analytical reference materials. Methylmethanethiosulfonate (MMTS) can be used to inhibit the enzyme methionine synthase, causing accumulation of homocysteine and methionine in cells, which leads to cell death. Maoecrystal A also has anti-inflammatory activities and may be used for screening for new bioactive compounds with similar properties.
