• Descrizione: 1-Mercaptoadamantane is a molecule that belongs to the group of thiolates. It has an effective dose of 31.6 μM for in vitro antibacterial activity, which is higher than many common antibiotics. 1-Mercaptoadamantane has been shown to inhibit growth of bacteria by reacting with the S-S bond in cysteine residues in the bacterial cell wall, altering its permeability and transport properties. This compound also can react with other sulfhydryl groups or thiols in the bacterial cell wall, such as mercaptans, cysteines, or glutathione. The reaction between 1-mercaptoadamantane and glutathione leads to hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid and formation of glutathione disulfide (GSSH), which inhibits bacterial growth.
