Descrizione:b-Methylcholine Iodide is a quaternary ammonium compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is active against bacteria and fungi and can be used in detergents, disinfectants, and preservatives. This compound has a hydroxy group at the b-position of the choline moiety that facilitates its antibacterial activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. The chloride ion of b-methylcholine iodide is replaced with a pyridinium ion, which makes it more soluble in water than other quaternary ammonium compounds. A metal carbonate such as calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate is often added to improve the solubility of this agent. Pyrithione (a sulfur-containing molecule) may also be added to this composition to increase its effectiveness against fungi.
