N-(4-Pentynyl)phthalimide is a butoxide that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. It is also an emulsifying agent, which may be useful in the formulation of topical drugs. This drug has been shown to bind to fatty acids and take them up into cells. N-(4-Pentynyl)phthalimide also has a molecular weight of 249.28, which is lower than many other emulsifying agents, making it more suitable for use with low concentrations of water. It can be used as a ligand to study the uptake of lipophilic compounds across cell membranes because it binds bile salts and bilirubin. N-(4-Pentynyl)phthalimide has been shown to be effective at killing brain tumor cells in tissue culture by inhibiting their growth by inhibiting protein synthesis.
