Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the production of prostaglandins. It is used in the treatment of pain, fever, and inflammation. The pharmacokinetics of naproxen are linear with increasing doses and it has a high bioavailability. Naproxen is metabolized in the liver to 6-keto-naproxen and both metabolites are excreted in urine. Naproxen sodium salt is an alternative formulation that provides increased water solubility and absorption after oral administration. Naproxen sodium salt has been shown to be effective for the treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, and rheumatoid arthritis. This drug should not be taken by people who have asthma or bronchial problems or ulcerative colitis. Naproxen should not be taken with other pain killers such as aspirin or ibuprofen because this can cause stomach bleeding or ulcers.
