The inhibition of the MPTP by 2-nitrobenzoic acid may be due to its ability to react with nitric oxide (NO) to form peroxynitrite, which reacts with MPTP proteins in the mitochondria. The use of 2-nitrobenzoic acid has been found to be effective in treating infectious diseases such as HIV, as well as autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis.
