Nitecapone is a drug that has been used to treat Parkinson's disease and bowel diseases. It is a catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) inhibitor, which prevents the breakdown of dopamine in the brain. Nitecapone also inhibits the activity of COMT in the liver, resulting in increased levels of dopamine in the blood. The effects of nitecapone on locomotor activity have been studied using an in vitro assay with isolated rat synaptosomes. Nitecapone has shown to be effective for treating diabetic neuropathy and may also have antioxidative properties. This drug binds to DNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting production of proteins vital for cell division. Nitecapone also inhibits enzymes such as kinases, which are involved in signal transduction pathways that lead to cell proliferation.
