N-Nitroso nipecotic acid is a nitrosamine that is formed in the body by the reaction of nitrite with secondary amines. It has been shown to induce tumours in hamsters and mice when it is administered orally. Nitrosamines are also found in urine samples of individuals who have cancer, and they may be an indicator of the risk of developing cancer. The long-term effects of nitrosamines have not been investigated in detail, but there is some evidence that they can cause cancer at low levels or when combined with other carcinogens. Nitrosamines are found in foods such as areca nuts, which are popular in India and Southeast Asia.
