It has been shown to inhibit the matrix metalloproteinases, which are enzymes that break down collagen, elastin, and other components of the extracellular matrix. 2-Nitroisophthalic acid has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in animal models. 2-Nitroisophthalic acid inhibits the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and prevents their proteolytic activity on the extracellular matrix by inhibiting their binding with zinc ions. This inhibition leads to a decrease in inflammation and tissue damage. The crystal structure of 2-nitroisophthalic acid shows that it forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which is important for its anti-inflammatory properties. Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors can be used for treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease.
