It has been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of the racemase enzyme, which converts D-alanine to L-alanine. D-Norleucine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium avium and other acid-fast bacteria by interfering with the production of ATP and incorporation into cellular structures. This inhibition is caused by its ability to form ionic bonds with functional groups in these compounds.
