It inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ribosomes and preventing protein synthesis. The antibiotic binds to the dihedral site of the 30S ribosomal subunit and stabilizes the binding of ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis. 4NTZ2A has also been shown to have antifungal activity, inhibiting cell growth in Candida albicans, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Cryptococcus neoformans. This drug also has antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris and Salmonella typhimurium.
