It has been shown to be genotoxic, which means it can cause genetic mutations. 2-Nitrocinnamic acid also induces the synthesis of cinnamic acid derivatives and is hydrolyzed by nitroreductases, leading to reactive oxygen species that are genotoxic. Nitrocinnamic acid may also cause cancerous effects on human lymphocytes.
