3,4-Pyridine dicarboxylic acid is a sodium salt of pyridine-dicarboxylic acid. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of HL-60 cells by binding with copper and inhibiting the activity of 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid in the electron transfer chain. This inhibits cellular respiration and ATP production, which leads to cell death. 3,4-Pyridine dicarboxylic acid binds to picolinic acid by hydrogen bonding interactions and coordinates with copper ions through a geometry that is not ideal for either molecule. This coordination prevents protonation of the carboxylate group on picolinic acid, which disrupts its catalytic activity.
