1-Phenylurea is a potent anti-cancer compound that inhibits the growth of bacteria. It binds to the α subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing cell death. 1-Phenylurea has been shown to be effective against cancerous cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis and inducing cell death. This drug also has the ability to cause myocardial infarcts in rats, which may be due to its effect on the α subunit of mammalian ribosomes. 1-Phenylurea is also an analytical reagent used for determining the purity of pharmaceutical preparations containing phenylureas as active ingredients.
