Phenoxyacetyl chloride is a substrate film-forming agent that is used in inflammatory bowel disease. The chemical structure of phenoxyacetyl chloride consists of an amide, dialkylamino, and hydroxyl group. These properties allow this compound to be used as an antimicrobial agent for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. Phenoxyacetyl chloride has also been shown to have inhibitory properties against autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and ulcerative colitis. It has been shown to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β by inhibiting the activity of their receptors. Picolinic acid is a metabolite of phenoxyacetyl chloride that also has anti-inflammatory properties even though it lacks inhibitory effects on cytokine production.
