Polyethylene glycol methyl ether (PEG) is a polymer made up of repeating ethylene oxide units with the general formula HO-CH2-O-CH2-. It is synthesized by reacting ethylene oxide with methanol. PEGs are often used as surfactants, solvents, and emulsifiers in pharmaceutical formulations. PEG methyl ether has been shown to be an effective matrix for solid supports in MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and microscopy. The main surface properties that affect the growth kinetics of cells on PEG methyl ether are hydrophilicity and surface charge density. PEG methyl ether is also used to prepare conjugates for cell culture experiments.
