Potassium azide is used as an oxidizing agent, a disinfectant, and a chemical reagent in organic synthesis. When combined with other substances such as fatty acids, it can be used to inhibit the replication of microorganisms. The thermal expansion coefficient of potassium azide has been measured by x-ray diffraction data and found to be 5.3 x 10-6 per °C at 20°C. Potassium azide emits light when exposed to radiation in the infrared region. Potassium azide may also have potential use for cancer treatment through selective killing of cancer cells and suppression of tumor growth, although this remains largely unproven.END>>
