The sample cell used for this experiment was made from stainless steel and had a volume of 2.0 mL with an inside diameter of 0.15 cm and an outside diameter of 0.25 cm. Hydrochloric acid was added to the reactor at a concentration of 10% by weight in order to simulate the formation rate of 1-pentene in the atmosphere. Low energy NMR spectroscopy was used to study the kinetic data for 1-pentene that were collected over time periods ranging from seconds to hours, which allowed for the determination of activation energies as well as chemical species and reactions involved in its formation process.
