Phenylglyoxal monohydrate is the calcium salt of phenylglyoxal. It is a receptor ligand that binds to the dinucleotide phosphate. Phenylglyoxal monohydrate has been shown to inhibit intracellular esterase activity, which may be due to its ability to bind with high affinity to human serum and other biological samples. This compound also inhibits the synthesis of coumarin derivatives, by competitive inhibition of the enzyme complex. Phenylglyoxal monohydrate has been used as a chemiluminescent probe in the determination of human serum metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus and liver cirrhosis.
