The reaction mechanism for this process is not yet fully understood. Palladium nitrate dihydrate is soluble in water and forms a white precipitate when heated. It has been used as an analytical reagent for the determination of chloride in organic solutions. Diameters of palladium nitrate dihydrate particles are typically between 10-100 nm, and the particle size can be controlled by changing the concentration of water in the reaction mixture.
