Prothiofos is a chemical compound that has been used as an insecticide. It also shows anti-bacterial activity against some strains of bacteria. Prothiofos is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and ethanol. It has been shown to be stable at room temperature and can be stored for up to four months at -20°C. Prothiofos inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the ryanodine receptor, which is part of the calcium release channel in cells. This prevents calcium ion channels from opening, which prevents muscle contraction and leads to cell death. The crystal structure of prothiofos has been determined using X-ray diffraction analysis, showing that it binds to the protein gene mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (MCO) with high affinity.
