L-Phenylalanine benzyl ester hydrochloride is an ester of L-phenylalanine and benzoic acid. It has a solubility of 1.9g/L in water, 2.1g/L in methanol, and 0.8g/L in acetonitrile at 20°C. The melting point is 119°C to 120°C and the boiling point is 243°C to 244°C at atmospheric pressure. This compound can be synthesized by reacting formamide with L-phenylalanine chloride in the presence of hexamethylphosphoramide as a catalyst.
