3-Phenyl-pyridin-2-ylamine (3PP) is a nitro that is used as a control agent in biological treatment. 3PP has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, which is an enzyme involved in the production of reactive oxygen species. 3PP has been shown to be effective against mutant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis resistant to other antituberculosis drugs, and has been found to have a cross-resistance with other antimicrobial agents. 3PP binds to the cytochrome b subunit of the respiratory chain, inhibiting the electron transport chain and leading to cell death. 3PP also inhibits protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes and interfering with translation.
