It is an inhibitor of the replication of RNA and DNA, and modulates enzyme activity. Phenyltrimethylammonium tribromide has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are important for nerve transmission. This drug also has been shown to inhibit the replication of HIV-1 and other viruses in vitro. Phenyltrimethylammonium tribromide can be synthesized by reacting epoxides with benzalkonium chloride or other quaternary ammonia compounds.
