Phenyl benzoate is a phenyl derivative that is used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. It binds to a receptor on the surface of cells and inhibits the activity of this receptor, which leads to inflammation. Phenyl benzoate has been shown to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α in primary cells from human erythrocytes. Phenyl benzoate also binds to a number of other receptors, including dopamine D2, serotonin 5HT3, muscarinic M1 and M4, histamine H1 and H3, acetylcholine nicotinic AChR and adrenergic α2A receptors. This binding leads to conformational changes in these receptors that result in decreased receptor function.
