Descrizione

Poliumoside is a natural product that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of coronary heart diseases. It is extracted from the root of Polygonum aviculare. Poliumoside has shown inhibitory properties against muscle cell proliferation and bacterial growth, and has been shown to be effective at inhibiting glycosidic bond formation. The chemical structure of poliumoside was determined by a combination of analytical methods such as hydroxyl group analysis, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Poliumoside contains an unusual pentacyclic triterpenoid skeleton with a hydroxyl group in the C-5 position and an ester bond in the C-3 position. This pentacyclic triterpenoid skeleton is found only in two other plant species: Echinacea purpurea and Momordica charantia (bitter melon).
