Ruthenium(IV) oxide hydrate is a carbon nanotube that has an optical sensor. It is activated by adsorption and can be used to investigate the reaction mechanism of asymmetric synthesis of organic compounds. Ruthenium(IV) oxide hydrate has been shown to have an adsorption mechanism that depends on the presence of functional groups, such as hydroxyl groups, in the substrate. This compound is also capable of absorbing x-rays at a wavelength of 1.5 Å, which provides information about its crystal structure. Ruthenium(IV) oxide hydrate exists in solid form and can be synthesized by reacting monohydric aldehydes with ruthenium metal in the presence of water or ethanol.
