Ramoplanin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to inhibit a wide range of human pathogens, including gram-positive species. Ramoplanin inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the D-alanyl-D-alanine moiety in peptidoglycan precursors and inhibiting both cell wall synthesis and cell division. This drug has been shown to have long-term efficacy in vivo models and is active against human serum. The intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the two phenyl groups of ramoplanin are thought to be responsible for its high binding affinity for the D-alanyl-D-alanine moiety.
