Descrizione:Rac-cotinine is a human metabolite of cotinine. It has been found to be a 5-HT4 receptor agonist, which may contribute to its psychoactive effects. Rac-cotinine has been shown to have antidepressant properties in humans by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Rac-cotinine also inhibits the production of nitric oxide (NO) in the liver and is an analytical method for detecting cotinine in human plasma samples. The chemical reaction mechanism for rac-cotinine involves the formation of methyl ketones through a two-step process that begins with enzymatic hydrolysis of nicotine. In vitro studies have shown that rac-cotinine is synthesized from nicotine by lipase and monoamine oxidase (MAO).
