Rhodium(III) iodide is a solid catalyst that reacts with hydroxyl groups to form carbonyl groups. The reaction mechanism of Rhodium(III) iodide is based on the oxidative carbonylation of organic compounds by the addition of hydroxyl radicals generated from hydrochloric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Rhodium(III) iodide can be used as a rechargeable catalyst for the oxidation of organic compounds in the presence of water and oxygen. Rhodium(III) iodide also has proton-removing properties, which leads to acid formation. It is important to note that radiation will cause the decomposition of Rhodium(III) iodide, so it should not be exposed to light or heat during usage. This active compound can react with amines and chloride ions to produce chloramines and chlorides, respectively.
