Rubixanthin is a carotenoid that can be found in the chloroplasts of plants. It has a chemical structure containing a hydroxyl group and an oxygenated carbon-carbon double bond. Rubixanthin is synthesized from geranylgeranyl diphosphate, which is formed from two molecules of acetyl-coenzyme A. Rubixanthin is an important component of the photosynthetic system, functioning as a light-harvesting antenna pigment. In vitro studies have shown that rubixanthin increases ATP levels and reduces oxidative stress in pluripotent cells.
