Sodium bisulfite is a chemical that is commonly used in the laboratory to inhibit the activity of DNA polymerases. It has been used in vitro to model infectious diseases, such as HIV, by simulating viral replication. This chemical has also been shown to be effective in chemiluminescence methods for the detection of polysaccharides and proteins. The optimum concentration for sodium bisulfite is 38-40%, and it should not be used at concentrations above 40%. Sodium bisulfite can cause bowel disease when consumed by humans at high doses or after long-term exposure. It has also been shown to be toxic to aquatic organisms at high concentrations. Sodium bisulfite is a strong reducing agent that can reduce copper ions into copper metal and iron ions into iron metal. This chemical has been studied extensively for its analytical applications, including its use in determining levels of dNTPs present in wastewater samples. Sodium bisulfite can react with DNA templates if they are present during the reaction solution
