Sulfonefluorescein is a fluorescent compound that can be used as a marker for the proximal tubules. It is a substrate molecule in the reaction of an inorganic acid with tubule cells and has been shown to produce hydrogen bonds with the monoclonal antibodies. Sulfonefluorescein has also been used to measure the rate of transport of molecules from the cell cytoplasm to the distal tubule. The glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the rate at which water and small molecules are filtered through the glomerulus and into Bowman's capsule, which is measured by using sulfonefluorescein. GFR can be calculated by measuring fluorescence intensity over time.
