(S)-Styrene glycol is a chemical compound that has a number of uses. It is used as an intermediate in the production of polyester, as a solvent for nitrocellulose, as an inhibitor in the polymerization of propylene oxide, and to modify the surface of analytical instruments. (S)-Styrene glycol also serves as a substrate for protein synthesis and can be used in the synthesis of amino acids and other biologically important compounds. (S)-Styrene glycol's ability to reduce carbonyl groups on proteins allows it to be used as an enzyme inhibitor to study protein-carbonyl interactions. The kinetic data obtained from these studies has shown that (S)-styrene glycol is most effective at inhibiting enzymes with a high affinity for carbon sources.
