Sulfaquinoxaline is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting protein synthesis. Sulfaquinoxaline binds to ribosomes and blocks the attachment of amino acids to the ribosome, preventing the formation of peptide bonds. This prevents the production of proteins vital for cell division, leading to cell death. Sulfaquinoxaline has been shown to be a synergistic effect with antibiotics such as ampicillin and erythromycin in the treatment of bowel disease. Sulfaquinoxaline is used in wastewater treatment as it is effective against antibiotic-resistant strains. It can also be used for analytical methods such as chromatography, which can be used for identifying antibiotic-resistant strains.
