• Descrizione: 9-Thioxanthone is a chemical compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of P-glycoprotein, which is a membrane protein that pumps drugs out of cells. 9-Thioxanthone binds to the drug transporter and prevents it from pumping out chemotherapeutic agents or other compounds. 9-Thioxanthone has also been shown to bind DNA and form DNA duplexes. This chemical compound can react with light, generating reactive oxygen species that are toxic to cells. 9-Thioxanthone may induce autophagy in cells by inhibiting the function of certain proteins within the cell. The reaction mechanism involving this compound is not well understood; however, it is thought that the hydroxyl group on the thioxanthone molecule may be involved in its toxic effects.
