Tolazoline hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic drug that has been used to treat pulmonary, diaphragmatic, and bowel diseases. It has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory activity and can be used as a bronchodilator for the treatment of asthma. Tolazoline hydrochloride is thought to act on the 2-adrenergic receptor by stimulating cyclic AMP production. It may also cause an increase in blood pressure through vasoconstriction and increased heart rate. The effects of this drug on the cardiovascular system are due to its ability to decrease vascular resistance, which increases blood flow. This drug is not recommended for use in patients with congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, or hypertension. Tolazoline hydrochloride is also thought to inhibit platelet aggregation and has been shown to be effective at reducing pain following dental procedures.
